Dax Crum : Athlete crushes possible obstacle

Dax Crum may accomplish more in his life with one good hand than most people will with two.Just watching him play, most people wouldn't initially notice any difference.The senior guard on the SUU men's basketball team was born missing much of his right hand, but said it hasn't slowed him down in achieving his goals."It hasn't been a problem, but it's been a determining factor in my life," he said. "I don't like to be told that I can't do things."Crum's competitive spirit is what SUU coach Bill Evans said is one of the key elements of his game."His competitive spirit is what makes him a good player," Evans said. "He's very positive and a good teammate. I think he's an outstanding guy, in every way, shape and form."Crum, a six-foot, one-inch guard, was a standout at Arizona Western College before his arrival at SUU. Evans said the T-Birds' coaching staff recruited Crum as a walk-on, and coach Ken Carrillo did much of the work in recruiting him."He's the guy who deserves the credit for the recruitment of him, I'm the guy that deserves the credit for putting up with Dax," Evans said jokingly.Crum played his high school basketball in Kirtland, N.M., and said he developed his game thanks to the help of his father, Richard, who spent countless hours rebounding the ball for him while he shot. Crum said his father has been the biggest influence in his life.Crum also said when he was younger, he tried to imitate former NBA star "Pistol" Pete Maravich, who was known for his shooting ability and dazzling ball-handling skills."First and foremost, I like to win," he said. "I like to put on a show. I think if you can make it fun and exciting for everyone, you should."Evans said the strengths of Crum's game are his competitiveness, work ethic, defensive skills and shooting ability."He's a good shooter, he can really shoot the ball - sometimes too much," Evans said jokingly.Crum laughed about Evans' comment, and said he agreed."I've got a scorer's mentality," he said.Evans said Crum is a quality athlete, and because of his talents, he is also playing defensive back for the T-Bird football team.Crum said he is looking forward to the beginning of the upcoming basketball season and the chance to compete for the Mid-Con title.Evans said Crum will contribute to the team in a number of ways this season."The value that he has in our program as a person and as a worker is being dedicated to Southern Utah basketball," he said. "The example that he sets and those kinds of things are far greater than his abilities He's a far better person than he is a player, and he's a pretty good player, so that shows you what kind of kid he is."

I've read a book of Dr. Kang Young woo, who is blind, but was named policy advisor of the National Council on Disability of the U.S. White House in 2001.

After he graduated with honors at Yonsei University, he went on to the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, and became the first blind Korean to earn both a masters degree (Psychology) and a doctorate (Special Education).

Even he is visually impaired, he came to study in U.S and receive Ph.D and got a faculty job.And his family 2 sons, are well educated and became laywer and doctor.

As I read the book, I thought of the many problems I bemoan in my own life such as foreigner, poor English, getting old.However, these are very minor limitations compare with Dr. Kang.

It was and being a wake-up call to me and everyone who is able to walk, run, see and talk.

I felt like God was shaking me by the head and shoulders.

God is talking to me "Stop dwelling on your complaints and disadvantages.

I want to remind this Today.

"Stop worrying about what you don't have".

Focus on what you do have which are, social ability, smile, work hard. research experience.

And I will puy my whole energy to making the best of them."

I got a traffic violation ticket in SF (always a lot of policeman there), That was my mistake. it was not allowed to turn.

Nevertheless, I am thankful to God for the safe trip.

비전은 가장 바람직한 미래를 향한 두려움 없는 도전 정신입니다. 대부분의 기도가 응답받지 못하고 파멸적인 결과만을 가져오는 주요 원인도 두려움입니다. 이 두려움에 맞서서 싸우는 정신이 바로 도전정신이고, 이런 도전정신이 바로 '믿음'의 본질이자 '비전'의 본질입니다.

[최요한 칼럼] 도전하는 인생

이 세상에서 가장 아름다운 사람은 도전하는 사람입니다. 겉으로 볼 때 불가능한 일도, 뜻이 있는 곳에 길이 있다는 말처럼 찾아보면 길이 있습니다. 실패에 대한 두려움으로 시도하지 않아서 그렇지 대부분의 어려운 일도 전심으로 도전하게 되면 성공할 수가 있습니다. 도전하는 인생을 살았던 대표적인 인물로 현대그룹 정주영 명예회장을 들 수 있습니다. 정주영 회장을 말할 때 빼놓지 않는 것이 있는데, 그의 인생철학입니다. 청개구리 철학과 빈대 철학입니다. 그 속에는 그의 무모한 듯 보이는 불굴의 도전정신이 담겨져 있습니다. 정주영 회장은 10대 때 출세를 위해 여러 차례 가출을 했습니다. 그러나 번번이 아버지에게 붙잡혀 집으로 올 수밖에 없었는데, 어느 날 네번째 가출을 결심합니다.그 때 정주영은 교과서에 나오는 ‘청개구리의 교훈’을 되새깁니다. 청개구리가 버드나무에 올라가려고 몸을 날려 뛰었다가 가지가 너무 높아 실패하지만 낙심하지 않고 열 번, 스무 번 계속 도전하여 서른번째에 결국 성공한다는 이야기였습니다. 그는 “개구리도 성공하는데 하물며 사람의 자식인 내가 이대로 주저앉을 수는 없다”며 도전 의지를 불태워서 결국 네번째 가출에 성공하여 서울에서 엿공장, 쌀가게 등으로 돈을 벌어 후에 현대그룹을 세우게 됩니다. 다음으로 그의 빈대철학이 있습니다. 청년 시절, 정주영은 인천 부두에서 막노동을 하였습니다. 당시 그는 한푼이라도 아끼기 위해 방을 얻지 않고 노동자 합숙소에서 잠을 잤는데, 합숙소의 낡은 벽 틈에 빈대가 우글거렸습니다. 밤마다 계속 빈대들이 무는 바람에 잠을 설치기 일쑤여서 밤새도록 잡고 또 잡는 날이 많았음에도 빈대는 여전히 그를 괴롭혔습니다. 그래서 생각해 낸 것이 식탁을 침대처럼 사용하는 것이었습니다. 식탁 네 다리마다 물을 가득 담은 세숫대야를 놓아서 안심하고 잠을 잤는데 빈대는 세숫대야의 물을 어떻게 건넜는지 잠자는 그를 괴롭혔습니다. 도저히 불가능하다고 생각한 일을 빈대는 해냈던 것입니다. 그래서 불을 켜고 자세히 살펴보니까 빈대가 벽을 타고 천장으로 올라가 자기에게로 떨어지는 것이었습니다. 그 때 정주영은 크게 깨달았습니다. “빈대도 목표에 도달하기 위해서 저렇게 노력을 하는데 인간인 내가 빈대만도 못해서 되겠는가” 정주영은 그 때부터 무엇이든지 하면 된다는 생각을 갖고 도전을 했습니다. 그래서 단돈 500원으로 영국의 버클레이 은행장을 설득하여 울산조선소를 세웠고, 다들 불가능하다고 여겼던 20세기 최대의 역사(役事)인 사우디아라비아 주베일 산업항 공사를 완벽하게 마쳤고, 또 서울이 1988년 올림픽 개최도시로 선정되는데 주도적인 역할을 하였습니다. 길이 없으면 길을 만들어낸다는 도전 정신이 그로 하여금 그 모든 일을 가능하게 하였던 것입니다.도전하는 인생은 세상이나 환경을 두려워하지 않습니다. 세상에 위대한 흔적을 남긴 사람들은 다 도전하는 사람이었습니다. 성경에도 보면 위대한 신앙의 인물들은 다 도전하는 사람들이었습니다. 갈렙은 85세의 나이로 가장 두렵고 공포스러운 아낙 자손들이 살고 있는 헤브론 산지를 점령했습니다. 소년 다윗은 천하무적의 골리앗과 맞서 당당히 승리를 거뒀습니다. 도전정신이 충만하였기 때문에 그들은 승리자가 될 수 있었습니다. 도전하는 인생처럼 아름다운 인생은 없다는 것을 기억하여, 크고 높은 목표를 향해 도전하는 용기 있는 인생들이 되시기를 바랍니다.

선택의 중요성

인생에서 우리는 매순간 선택의 갈림길에 놓여서 이것이냐, 저것이냐를 결정해야 한다. 덴마크의 철학자 키에르케고르(Søren Aabye Kierkegaard ; 1813~1855)는 “인간에게 가장 중요한 것은 ‘이것이냐 저것이냐’ 하는 선택의 문제다”라고 말했다. 선택을 잘하면 행복한 삶을 살지만 선택을 잘못하면 불행하게 된다. 매일 한순간 한순간 선택을 해야 하는 것이 인간의 운명이다.

영국의 역사학자 토마스 칼라일(Thomas Carlyle ; 1795~1881)은 “인생에는 세 가지 중요한 선택이 있다”고 했다. 첫째 ‘무엇을 할까?’ 직업의 선택이다. 둘째 ‘누구와 사귈까?’ 결혼의 선택이다. 셋째 ‘누구를 믿을까?’ 친구나 동업자 등 믿을 사람과 믿을 수 없는 사람의 분별이다.

이 모든 선택 다음에는 자기 선택에 대해 책임을 져야 한다. 선택을 잘 하면 유익이 있고 혜택도 있지만, 선택을 잘못하면 그로 인해서 고생하고 어려움을 당한다. 대통령도 잘 선택해서 정치를 잘하면 나라에 유익이 있지만, 잘못 선택해서 정치적으로 실수를 하면 경제가 침체되고 많은 어려움을 겪게 된다. 우리나라는 지난 5년 동안 경제가 많이 침체되었다. 통계를 보면 점점 나라에 빚이 많아지고 개인 빚도 사상 최대로 많아졌다. 나라가 어렵다보니 자살하는 숫자도 많아져서 대한민국은 자살공화국이라는 말까지 나온다. 청년 실업자도 사상최대로 많아졌고, 견디다 못해 이민 간 사람들도 많았다. 우리는 인생을 살면서 매순간 직장의 선택, 결혼할 배우자의 선택, 교회 선택 등 선택해야 할 일이 많다. 그래서 무엇을 선택할 것인가를 깊이 생각해야지, 잘못 선택하면 그 선택에 대한 책임을 져야 한다.런던대학교 연구팀이 영국 공무원 911명을 12년 동안 추적조사 했다. 결혼생활과 같은 가까운 인간관계에서 문제를 겪는 사람은 부부관계가 화목한 사람에 비해 심장마비 등 각종 심장질환에 걸릴 가능성이 34%나 높았다. 배우자를 잘못 선택해도 일찍 심장병으로 사망한다고 한다. 어느 집에 불이 났다. 그 집 여주인이 겁에 질려 혼자 뛰쳐나왔는데 갑자기 불 속으로 용감하게 뛰어 들어갔다. 그녀는 그 속에서 귀금속 상자를 끌어안고 나왔다. 거기에는 팔지, 목걸이, 귀걸이, 시계 등 보석이 들어있었다. 그녀는 “휴, 이제야 살았다. 천만다행이네. 이게 얼마짜리인데”하고 안도의 한숨을 쉬었다. 그런데 갑자기 뒤에서 구경하던 사람들이 소리쳤다. “여보세요! 저 창가에 어린아이가 있어요.” 그때서야 여주인은 귀금속 챙길 생각만 했지, 아이들을 챙길 생각을 하지 못했다는 것을 깨달았다. 그녀는 다시 뛰어 들어가려고 했지만, 이미 때는 늦어 집이 불에 타 쓰러지고 아이들은 목숨을 잃고 말았다.

한순간의 선택은 평생을 좌우하며, 선택에 대한 책임은 자신에게 있는 법이다.그렇다면 인생의 선택에 있어서 가장 중요한 기준은 무엇일까? 바로 ‘하나님’이다. ‘하나님을 섬기는 선택인가, 아닌가?’, ‘하나님께서 원하는 것인가, 아닌가?’에 달려있다. 이 두 선택의 결과는 어떻게 다를까?

첫째, 하나님을 섬기는 선택의 축복 역사상 하나님을 선택한 자는 모두 하나님의 보호와 축복으로 행복한 인생을 살았다. 기독교는 행복의 종교이다. 하나님을 선택해서 그 말씀대로 살면 인생이 형통하고, 가정도 화목하고, 민족도 행복해진다. 박경실 씨는 유치원 때부터 교회를 다닌 크리스천이었다. 그녀는 대학을 졸업하고 남편을 만나 결혼을 한 후 맨손으로 파고다 외국어 학원을 차렸다. 부부가 손잡고 학원 운영에 온 힘을 다하자, 학원이 점점 잘 되어서 돈도 많이 벌게 되었다. 그렇게 되자 하나님을 멀리하기 시작하였다. 잘못된 선택을 한 것이다. 하나님의 보호를 떠나자 곧 어려움이 닥쳐왔다. IMF 경제파동으로 강남 파고다 학원의 문을 닫게 된 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 협심증으로 수술까지 받게 되었다. 돈이 떨어지고 건강까지 잃게 되자 부부는 정신이 들었다. 그래서 기도원에 올라가 “하나님, 나는 할 수 없습니다. 오직 하나님은 할 수 있습니다”하고 지난날 하나님을 떠나 산 것을 회개하였다. 그러자 성령 충만함을 받고 신유은사와 방언의 은혜를 체험한 부부는 신앙이 뜨거워졌다. 그날부터 가정예배, 금요철야 등 예배마다 다 드리며 절대 사랑의 실천과 나눔과 섬김의 리더십으로 학원을 운영하기 시작했다. 그랬더니 건강이 다시 좋아졌고, 학원도 다시 일어섰다. 회사는 학생이 늘어 600여 명의 직원이 근무하는 회사로 성장하면서 연매출 520억 원이 되었다. 크리스천 기업으로서 문서선교의 사명을 감당하기 위해 가이드포스트를 발행하게 되었다. 하나님을 선택하면 축복이 넘친다.둘째, 하나님을 버리는 선택의 심판 하나님은 축복의 하나님, 사랑의 하나님이시지만, 때론 심판도 하신다. 하나님의 축복을 받고 보호함을 받았다 할지라도, 돌이켜서 하나님을 떠나면, 하나님께서 복을 걷어 가시고 화가 임하고 심판이 임한다. 우리나라도 대통령으로부터 국민 한 사람 한 사람 모두가 정치, 경제, 사회의 각 분야에서 하나님 중심이 될 때, 이 민족이 발전하고 잘 사는 나라가 될 수 있고, 통일이 되어 남과 북이 하나가 될 수 있을 것이다. 만약 하나님을 떠나 우상을 숭배한다면 미래를 기대하기 어렵다.프랑스의 종교개혁자 존 칼뱅(Jean Calvin ; 1509~1564)은 “우상숭배는 하나님께 용서받지 못할 가증스럽고 배은망덕(背恩忘德)한 죄다”라고 말했다.요즘 보면 관광도, 선교도 몽골지역으로 많이 간다. 몽골 땅은 대한민국보다 16배나 더 크다. 그러나 몽골은 얼마나 가난한지 목욕 시설, 전기 시설도 없다. 몽골제국의 칭기즈칸(Chingiz Khan ; 1155 ~1227)은 나폴레옹, 히틀러, 알렉산더가 통치하던 모든 국가보다 더 많은 땅을 차지했었다. 그런데 지금은 아주 미개한 국가로 전략하고 말았다. 몽골지역은 자원이 풍부하고 땅이 넓은데 왜 그렇게 가난하고 굶주리고 인구도 별로 많지 않을까? 거대한 제국 몽골이 급속히 몰락하게 된 원인은 두 가지가 있다.첫째, 종교를 잘못 선택해서이다. 그들이 선택한 종교는 교리도 없고 경전도 없는 티베트불교이다. 흔히 ‘라마불교’라고 말한다. 라마불교는 백성을 하나로 묶을 수 없었고, 통일제국을 이끌어 갈 만한 힘도 없었다. 불교는 세속을 떠나 해탈을 구하다보면 실제 삶에 무관심해지기 쉽다. 그래서 불교 국가 치고 잘 사는 나라가 없다.둘째, 공산주의를 택해서이다. 1924년 몽골은 인민공화국이 되어, 1936년에 스탈린의 노선을 따르지 않는 사람들, 유능한 정치인, 지성인 훌륭한 지도자들을 붙잡아다가 반동이라는 죄목으로 처형했었다. 이때 암살당한 사람만 3~4만 명에 이른다. 이 잘못된 선택이 몽골의 몰락을 가져온 것이다.우리나라도 선택을 잘해야 앞으로 발전하는 선진국이 될 수 있다. 하나님을 선택하고 하나님 편에 선 사람을 지도자로 선택할 때, 하나님께서 우리나라에 복을 주신다. 대한민국이 하나님의 축복 받는 살기 좋은 나라, 행복한 나라, 선한 나라가 될 것을 믿고, 항상 하나님을 섬기는 선택을 하고, 자신의 선택에 대해서는 책임을 지는 자세를 가져야겠다.

Studying the past to help us live in the present

The speaker claims that since so much in today's world is new and complex the pastprovides little guidance for living in the present. I agree with this assertion insofar ashistory offers few foolproof panaceas for living today. However, I disagree with thespeaker's claim that today's world is so unique that the past is irrelevant. One goodexample that supports my dual position is the way society has dealt with its pressingsocial problems over time.Admittedly, history has helped us learn the appropriateness of addressing certainsocial issues, particularly moral ones, on a societal level. Attempts to legislate moralityinvariably fail, as illustrated by Prohibition in the 1930s and, more recently,failed federallegislation to regulate access to adult material via the Internet. We are slowly learningthis lesson, as the recent trend toward legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposesand the recognition of equal rights for same-sex partners both demonstrate.However, the only firm lesson from history about social ills is that they are here tostay. Crime and violence,for example, have troubled almost every society. All mannerof reform, prevention, and punishment have been tried.Today, the trend appears to beaway from reform toward a "tough-on-crime" approach. Is this because history makesclear that punishment is the most effective means of eliminating crime? No; rather,the trend merely reflects our current mores, attitudes, and political climate.Another example involves how we deal with the mentally-ill segment of the population.History reveals that neither quarantine, treatment, nor accommodation solvesthe problem, only that each approach comes with its own trade-offs. Also underminingthe assertion that history helps us to solve social problems is the fact that, despitethe civil-rights efforts of Martin Luther King and his progenies, the cultural gap todaybetweenAfricanAmericans and white Americans seems to be widening. It seems thatracial prejudice is a timeless phenomenon.To sum up, in terms of how to live together as a society I agree that studying thepast is of some value; for example, it helps us appreciate the futility of legislatingmorality. However, history's primary sociological lesson seems to be that today's socialproblems are as old as society itself, and that there are no panaceas or prescriptionsfor solving these problems-only alternate ways of coping with them.

Though they stand on opposite sides of a political divide, the Republican president and the Democratic senator from New York are sharing the honor for a sixth straight year, according to a USA Today- Gallup poll.
They didn't win by much. Oprah Winfrey and Clinton's husband, former president Bill, were right behind.
When people were asked to name the man they most admire, 10 percent picked Bush, his lowest figure in the seven years he has been president. Bill Clinton got 8 percent—within the poll's margin of sampling error—while Nobel Prize winner and former Vice President Al Gore had 6 percent and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, a presidential hopeful, was chosen by 5 percent.
Whoever is president has won the most-admired title every year since 1981.

This phenomena is quite different from our country. We select the president and are disappointed after that. We, Korean, are not supportive, but always critisize.
Korean needs to believe governor and support and help.

The Black Death, or the Black Plague, was one of the most deadly pandemics in human history, widely thought to have been caused by a bacterium named Yersinia pestis and spread by fleas with the help of animals like the black rat. It probably began in Central Asia[2] and spread to Europe by the late 1340s.

The total number of deaths worldwide from the pandemic is estimated at 75 million people; there were an estimated 20 to 30 million deaths in Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed between one-third and two-thirds of Europe's population.

The 14th century eruption of the Black Death had a drastic effect on Europe's population, irrevocably changing Europe's social structure. It was a serious blow to the Roman Catholic Church, and resulted in widespread persecution of minorities such as Jews, foreigners, beggars, and lepers.

We do not wish to be forgetful hearers of the Word of God, but obedient serving, faithful doers of the Word of God directed to us.
